I know from experience that students from ages 9-12 can learn at an extraordinary pace when they are motivated.  Especially for youngsters, motivation comes when lessons are fun, so the initial goal early on is to simply learn a few songs to play.  When a youngster can experience early on the thrill of playing a song for friends and family, they will be more likely become motivated to practice and learn more.​
